'One of the advantages of acupuncture is that the incidence of adverse effects is substantially lower than that of many drugs or other accepted medical procedures used for the same conditions.' 1997 NIH Consensus Development Conf.
How Does It Work?
The ancient Chinese recognized a vital energy behind all life forms and life processes. They called this energy Qi. In devloping an understanding of the prevention and cure of disease, these healing practitioners discovered that this energy flows along specific pathways called 'meridians.' Acupuncture points are specific locations along these pathways. Each point has a predictable effect upon the vital energy passing through it. Blockage of the circulation through these meridians can cause pain and/or disease. By stimulating these points, energetic flow is encouraged through the blocked areas thereby relieving pain and restoring balance.
What Can I Expect?
Many conditions may be alleviated quickly. Generally, acute conditions respond more quickly than chronic ones. The patient's attitude, diet, determination and lifestyle will affect the outcome of a course of treatment. Patients are encouraged to actively participate in their healing process. Acupuncture and Oriental medicine should be seen as complementary to Western medicine.
"Acupuncture is often the catalyst in restoring the body's own natural healing mechanisms."
